When to Call Us
Examples of when you should contact the Conservation Commission:
If you are within 100 feet of a wetland or any river, stream, or creek of a regulated wetland, or just want to make sure before starting any of the following project below. NOTE: These are a few examples and not a complete list of what is regulated by the Conservation Commission.
- You plan to do any landscaping alteration to the land adjacent to or near the above.
- You plan to cut any brush, trees, etc. or plant a bush or tree or change the vegetation in a regulated wetland, along a stream banks, etc.
- Before you build a house, addition, add a shed, pool or any project to your house that involves a building permit application or build or develop a subdivision.
- You plan to pave what is now a gravel driveway.
- You plan to install a new driveway or access way.
- You plan to install or repair a septic system.
- You plan to alter a stream or stream-bed, install a culvert or bridge (including temporary bridges).
- You plan to do something about that nasty standing body of water on your property, including filling or draining it to remove standing water.
- You plan to move, install or modify a rock wall or install one located on the banks of a river or stream, including repair of the stone work or any other erosion control work.
- You’re wondering what that NO WORK BEYONE THIS POINT sign means.
- You’re wondering what DEP followed by a 173-XXX on a sign means.
- When you recently bought a house or building-lot and are wondering what the restrictions about not building within the restricted area of a wetland mean.
- You plan to use Conservation Land for any event.

- You plan on having your property logged either for timber or firewood.
