Highway Department

Our Duties & Responsibilities

The Hampden Highway Department is responsible for ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians that use our public ways by maintaining roughly 55 miles of town roads. Our mission is to provide a safe, pleasurable driving experience for our residents and visitors passing through. We try to accomplish this with continued maintenance of our scenic roadways and upkeep of our clean and groomed roadsides. Snow and ice removal is a winter priority for the entire staff, who is tasked with providing safe travel conditions on town roads and parking lots in a timely fashion. Ice treatment is accomplished through applications of salt and sand, or a mixture of both.

The Highway Department is also responsible for the upkeep of traffic and street signs, guardrails, bridges and culverts, roadside brush and tree removal, traffic lines and crosswalks, patching potholes, and all other road maintenance functions. A storm water collection system with more than 700 catch basins is cleaned and inspected annually. Streets in town are swept at least once each year as well.
